In unfortunate news, actor Larry Hagman has reportedly died at the age if 81. The actor best known for his roles in I Dreamed of Jeannie and Dallas was battling cancer and unfortunately passed away at a hospital in Dallas yesterday.
He played the part of Jeannie’s “master” Captain Anthony Nelson in the classic NBC sitcom I Dream of Jeannie, starring opposite Barbara Eden in the beloved series, which ran for five seasons and more than a hundred episodes from 1965-1970.
Watch: “I dreamed of Jeannie” (1965, Season 1, Episode 1):
[I Dream of Jeannie had a premise of astronaut Tony Nelson finding a beautiful, blond 2000-year-old genie in a bottle after a flight. Jeannie turns out to be mischievous, a little innocent and very much in love with her master. The only other person who knows their secret is Roger Healey, Tony’s best friend and fellow astronaut].
And this is what Barbara Eden (Jeannie) wrote today in her facebook profile status:
As I received the news this evening and as you read this I still cannot completely express the shock and impact from the news that Larry Hagman has passed. I can still remember, that first day on Zuma Beach with him, in the frigid cold. From that day for five more years, Larry was the center of so many fun, wild, shocking… and in retrospect, memorable moments that will remain in my heart forever. He was such a key element in my life for so long and even, years after I Dream of Jeannie; our paths crossed many times. (…) Amidst a whirlwind of big laughs, big smiles and unrestrained personality Larry was always, simply Larry. You couldn’t fault him for it, it was just who he was. I am so thankful that this past year I was able to spend time with him and experience yet again ‘Larry’ in all his Big Texas bravado.(…) Goodbye Larry, there was no one like you before and there will never be anyone like you again.
RIP Major Nelson…
